Taizhou, a young city on the golden coastline of China, is situated at the center of Zhejiang off-shore regions and to the south end of Shanghai as an economical zone. The heart of TaizhouCity, governed by subtropical monsoon climate, is the place where 122o East Longitude and 28o interlace. The urban area being divided into three districts, i.e. Jiaojiang, Huangyan and Luqiao, the city exercises jurisdiction over four counties: Linhai, Wenling, Yuhuan, Tiantai and Xianju etc. Within the territory, land area registers 9,411km2 and sea area covers 80,000km2. With a total population of 5.46 million, Taizhou has 1.4 million people living in urban area which occupies an area of 1,536km2.
Taizhou is reputed for its long history. Here the fossil of Jiangnan pterosaur was discovered and the birthplace of Xiatang culture in the Neolithic Age five thousand years ago is located. On this land, HuipuTown was set up after Ying Zhen, the first emperor of Qin, unified China, HuipuCounty in Han Dynasty (85 BC), and LinhaiPrefecture in the period of Three Kindoms. It first received the present name, i.e., Taizhou, in Tang Dynasty (the year 622). Since the foundation of PRC, it adopts the administrative system of prefectural administrative office. In August 1994, approved by the State Council, TaizhouCity were officially set up.
Taizhou, extolled as ¡°renowned mountain on the sea¡± in history, holds an advantageous geographic position. Taizhou, as a leading grain producer in Zhejiang, is the place which broke the records of 500kg/mu and 1,000kg/mu in our country. Besides, as one of major fruit producing areas in China, Huangyan honey-sweet mandarin and Yu Huan Wen Dan win reputations from home and abroad. Moreover, Taizhou is also deemed as a major fishing zone of the country, with the vast and prolific East China Sea Fishery providing largest fishery output in Zhejiang.
Taizhou with booming economy and flourishing markets is the cradle of joint-stock system in China. The passed 20 years since the country implemented the reform and opening policy have witnessed Taizhou people undertaking hardships in blazing trails; freeing themselves of old thinking patters, they have sought approaches agreeable to actual conditions in the city to develop economy. With socialist market economic layout elementarily fledged, the city has wrapped up the transforming stage from relatively backward and purely agricultural region to preliminary industrialization, ascending to the rank of rather developed coastal cities.
Taizhou enjoys expedient traffics and advanced communication. Haimen port, a key window on the other places outside the city, saw the first course line to Taiwan being made accessible in 230 AD. With a cubic traffic system combining sea, land and air ways nearly accomplished, today¡¯s Taizhou are in possession of harbors, airport, the national road No. 104, and coastal freeway.

In 1999, with approval from the State Council, Taizhou is decided as a large city as well as a first-class economic sub-region in Zhejiang urbanization planning. In 2000, the Taizhou municipality, putting forward the strategic objective ¡°Promote key industries, develop large harbors, construct quality traffic ways and build a top city¡±, blueprinted to build Taizhou as a prosperous, high-quality and beautiful modernized port city.
The objective for Taizhou second rise consists in: building it into a modernized off-shore city with advanced technologies, industries and trades by 2020. |
